Geocache Description:

Along an EASY loop trail in Kahana Valley State Park. This should be a pretty easy cache to find. The overall elevation gain is only about 260 feet. Forget the bike business!

Take Kamehameha Highway on the Windward Coast to Kahana Valley State Park. Drive into the park and park at the following location: 21 33.021 N 157 52.893 W. From there walk into and thru the community, around a gate and up a paved road to the check-in station.

When you reach the Hunter/Hiker check-in station turn your GPS on and follow it to your left. You'll be on a trail all the way except when crossing the dam. There is NO NEED to bushwack. Be careful as the underwater surface of the dam can slippery. Bring a swim suit and relax in the deep cool water below the dam on your return.

The cache container inside a 2 gallon zip lock bag and is well covered so please return it to that condition when you are finished logging in. This is an area used by hikers and hunters so please cover it well so it will last.

Contents at the beginning are all small Teddy Bears that I picked up in North Carolina in May. Each bear is in a zip lock bag to keep out water. There is also a log book and a first to find card. Lets try and keep contents to only Teddy Bears or other SMALL stuffed toys. Right now it is STUFFED to the limit. It should take about 1/2 hour to get to the cache well if you're slow maybe 45 minutes.

This is a KID friendly cache if you help the little ones across the dam. Well maybe they shouldn't be "to" little.

For the more adventurous of you, try doing the double loop mentioned below and go after my "Kahana Valley 99 Cent Geocache" also.

If you read Stuart's book he describes a double loop shaped like a figure eight hike on page 209 of his "the Hikers Guide to O`ahu", revised edition. This is a great somewhat easy loop of about 6 miles. If you do only the first half of the loop it's about 4 miles. If you do any of the hikes described here there is no way you can keep your boots dry. The loop is not for small kids due to stream crossing. In the winter the stream flow could be quite strong so use your brain before making any of the crossings. Remember the rocks in the stream are slippery.

If you are really up for an adventure check out my caches along the trail to Pu`u O`Kila. If you count the two caches mentioned here you can score 3 more along the Pu`u O`Kila hike. Pu`u O`Kila is tough but you can score 5 caches if you're tough also.

Be safe and enjoy yourself.

Wai`anae CRider
