This cache has been created to celebrate the completion of
Cycle Route
51 – in particular the section running through Bury St Edmunds,
Suffolk.
The co-ordinates given are the starting point of this
multi-stage cache (Waypoint S0). The route followed is circular and
takes around 60 minutes on bicycles with all the stops and starts.
There is plenty of parking in the roads surrounding the starting
point, although in theory you could start from anywhere on the
Cycle Route 51. The cache route consists of about 1/3rd cycle path,
1/3rd quiet country roads and 1/3rd very quiet tracks. The route
can also be walked (will obviously take longer) and I
suppose can be completed by car (with some careful planning) –
but where is the fun in that?
From the starting co-ordinates, proceed in an easterly direction
(r.h. side of the road, up the hill – let’s at least start
together) along the cycle path to N52 14.880 E000 46.767 (Waypoint
S1); a couple of km stretch eventually passing
Rougham Airfield.
En route:
- How many cycles are painted on the tarmac of the main cycle
route (ignoring any off on side-roads). This is A
- At the official Cycle Route sign, how many miles further is
Newmarket than Stowmarket? Divide by two and this is B.
We now leave the cycle path and proceed by road to N52 15.056
E000 46.949 (Waypoint S2). Find the notation 3CmDEc – where CDE are
missing numbers. Continue on to N52 15.596 E000 46.058 (Waypoint
S3) – how many years older was Robert than Phoebe? Now subtract 2 -
this is F.
Now onto the cache, which is hidden at N52 CB.EDA E000
DB.DFF.
Return to the starting point via N52 15.111 E000 45.660
(Waypoint S5).
