Geocache Description:

This cache is located at the Broad Street Green in Historical Old Wethersfield and will not be as easy to find as the one it replaced. Please be sure to rehide the container as found, otherwise it could present problems for the next finder.

The towns of Wethersfield and Rocky Hill are lovely communities, each with several nice recreation areas ranging from ball fields to diverse hiking trails and even a pond for bass fishing. I've created several caches to highlight the towns and show a little of what they have to offer.

The Broad Street Green in Old Wethersfield is the historical center of the town. It's where townspeople gathered and spent time together. You can almost see and feel the people walking around, riding their horses and talking together, walking along the the old dirt roads that once existed in this thriving trading community. Now, over 350 years later, the roads are paved and the trees are bigger, but people still gather at the green to talk, walk their dogs and celebrate together as a community.

Wethersfield has deep historical roots and was a center in the revolutionary war. This is where George Washington visited and planned the battle of Yorktown, the final battle of the Revolutionary War. The green is where the 9th company of Connecticut's 6th Regiment assembled and then marched to Boston to fight the Battle of Bunker Hill in June of 1775. The 9th company had the honor of being called "The most accomplished body of men in the American Army." Also at the green the nations first cavalry unit, the Second Regiment of Light Dragoons, was formed under orders from George Washington in December of 1776.

As you spend time on the green, please take a few minutes to read the many plaques telling the detailed history of the area.

Also check out the old trees. Some are over 6 feet wide and 300 years old. Sadly, many of them have been vandalized over the years with carvings cut into their trunks.

Unfortunately, the original cache, which was a small lock and lock box placed in the nook of a very large tree, went missing recently. We felt that placing a similar container would also end up missing, so as much as we didn't want to, we have placed a new micro not too far from the original cache location. If you need more hints, please ask.

Our GPS was accurate to 17 feet at the time of placement. As always, do not damage any of the surroundings when searching for the cache.
