Farnley Scars (Northumberland) Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Walker Dan: Looks as though this one has gone the journey. No sign of it today, although my brother in law did walk along here in the spring and although he knew nothing about geocaching told us about a box he had found by the side of the path, so it may still be out there somewhere although everything overgrown at the moment.

Geocache Description:

A flat mile walk to the cache.

The cache is on the south bank of the River Tyne and can be approached from Corbridge or Riding Mill. It is about equidistant between the two, although the approach from Riding Mill is flatter the path is more overgrown in the summer and there are nettles and brambles so shorts aren't recommended. In addition to the above there is also a fair amount of Himalayan Balsam which will give a nice smell to the walk in August, if you like the smell that is. The path from Corbridge starts just by the bridge and the first building you pass on the right used to be a maternity hospital where Walker Dan made his entry into the world. It was then a pub where he also spent a fair amount of time. From Corbridge the old path below the scars has been washed away and replaced by a new path over the scars themselves. There are steps and a fairly vertical stile to go up from this direction. Just by the steps is an old railway tunnel, now bricked up but interesting all the same. I can remember going through the tunnel on a train in the early 1960's.
Starting point at Riding Mill is the railway station where there is parking. Cross the railway line by the bridge and go right to the far end of the platform where there is a gate and the start of the path.
