Thomas West describes 21 'stations' or viewpoints in the first guide book to the Lake District. Copies available to read in most Cumbrian libraries. Peter Crosthwaite of Keswick, published in 1794, outline maps showing these stations around the 4 major lakes West describes. Coniston Water has 4 stations, Windermere has 5, Derwentwater has 8 and Bassenthwaite lake has 4.
This is one of two additional stations added for travellers approaching the Lakes from the east. All the stations were chosen for scenic view and charm, making ideal geocache locations. Nowadays trees have matured to obstruct some of the views. Look out for other Thomas West geocaches.
Start your walk through the swing gate at Car Park Entrance on north west side of the bridge. Turn either left or right. Masochists go straight up following their arrow. Left takes you to the boundary metal fence, where a rougher path leads to cache site. Right gradually rises to path junction and swing gate out of wood. Opposite this gate is rougher path ascending to iron age fort. Cache is in a clearing.
Gpsr signal may be poor under tree canopy. Advanced detection skills may be needed. There is a clearing near the cache. Approach from Ullswater side will take you through a 'stunning display' of bluebells in Spring (stonefielders log April 2007)
All the stations are marked on Peter Crosthwaite's maps, which are now available online.
Cache is sparse as a SOTAcache, containing:
