Geocache Description:

Come visit a sky island!

Marys Peak, at 4,097 feet, is the highest point in Oregon’s Coast Range and the most prominent peak viewed westward from Corvallis. On a clear day one can see both the Pacific Ocean to the west and many of the Cascade peaks to the east across the Willamette Valley. There are also several areas of historical, botanical and geological interest.

To find Marys Peak, follow Highway 34 west from Philomath for 10 miles then turn north from Highway 34 onto Marys Peak Road. From December 1 to March 31, the road to Marys Peak is gated at milepost 5.5, near Connor’s Camp. Non-motorized winter recreation is allowed beyond the gate. A per car pass is required (if you don't have a season pass) for $5 and is available at a self-serve station at the parking lot at the end of the Mary's Peak Road (44.30.611, 123.33.022)

There are several different ways to approach the summit,and you can get a trail map here. I suggest the following summer route: Start at the observation parking lot and walk the gravel road up to the summit. If you do this between June and August you will be treated to the spectacular rock gardens on the south flank of the summit.

This is a simple multi-cache and the above coordinates are for the single waypoint at the summit benchmark. Here you will need to walk over to the structures and collect two 3 digit numbers and then do some simple math to determine the cache location.

The first value: aaa- is found on the transformer box located between the two buildings. There is a sequence of letters and numbers on the box, get the three digit number between A and R.

For the second coords, find bbb: The larger building at the top has several microwave antennas on an attached tower. Look up for a gray antenna pointing in a westerly direction. It has an identifier on it in the form of an E followed by a 5 digit number that starts with 11. Take the last three digits of that number and call that bbb.

The final cache coordinates are:

N 44 30.xxx
W 123 33.yyy

xxx= (aaa-173)
yyy=(bbb-54)

Now that you have the final coordinates, take the summit trail(which starts near the benchmark) down to the meadowedge trail.

PLEASE USE THE TRAIL-DO NOT CROSS THE MEADOW DIRECTLY TO THE CACHE COORDINATES.IT WILL NOT SAVE YOU ANY TIME.

The cacheis an ammo box, located just a few steps off the meadowedge trail.
