The Upper Rock Fort [Overberget] lies somewhat removed from Fredriksten fortress proper, behind the camp site. It was built to prevent the enemy of the age, the Swedish, from gaining a dominant foothold that has a good firing line to the main fortress.
It was built from 1686 to 1700. Later, leading up to independence in 1905, it was strengthened and had weapons added that were later removed as part of the Norwegian/Swedish agreement. Now, there are excellent views to all sides, and also a campsite and shop nearby, and of course the main fortress (and other caches). One side overlooks one of the greens for the pleasant Fredriksten 18-hole golf course.
NB The cache is reached from outside the fortress and there is no need to search the stonework of the fortress itself. It has some nice new swag items.
