Located in Cockaponsette State Forest on Rt 80 in Deep River. Parking for several vehicles is just off a paved un-marked road (Spruce Ledge Road) across from Tower Hill Lake at coordinates N 410 21.545, W 0720 30.367. The first stage is a small micro container with coordinates to the second stage, an ammo box. Total round trip distance is about 1.5 miles. Make sure you mark your car as a waypoint.
I found this neat area last winter while exploring the network of trails (and off trails) in this corner of Cockaponsette State Forest. Quite a bit of bushwacking was involved at the time, but you will only have to do about 75 yards or so to reach your destination. The trail to the first stage is an old woods road with broken asphalt. On the way to the second stage the trail starts out flat and grassy, but soon turns into a stream bed going downhill. At some point (later than sooner) you’ll want to start your bushwack to the final cache. Why go? For the rocks—a massive conglomeration of boulders and ledge with all kinds of nooks and crannies. I think there are even a couple of places the Leatherman could have curled up in.
Quickest way back is to retrace your steps in an easterly direction, across the brook to the trail, then continue south-southeast; the trail becomes a wood road and comes out on Rt. 80. From here it’s less than 500 yards back to the parking lot. The cars go quite fast on this road so stay inside the bike lane and take advantage of the grassy shoulder part of the way. You should be back at the entrance in 6-7 minutes.
