Apparently; Brackland or Bracklin, a waterfall in Callander parish, Perthshire, on the rivulet Kelty, 1½ mile NNE of Callander village. It occurs in a chasm or rocky gorge, about 14 feet wide; is preceded by a tumultuous rapid, over a succession of rocky ledges; and makes a sheer leap of 50 feet. A narrow rustic bridge has been thrown across the chasm above the fall, and affords a clear view of the rivulet's plunge into the pool below. A young man and woman, in 1844, frolicking on this bridge, fell from it into the abyss. Sir Walter Scott describes Roderick Dhu as ‘brave but wild as Bracklin's thundering wave.' The name derives from 'breac', a trout, and 'linn' meaning a pool of water.
The car park at the start of this walk is a short drive out of town, up a steep narrow road which leaves the A84 opposite the Roman Camp Hotel on Callander's main thoroughfare. At the back of the car park, a small path descends to an information board where the route proper begins. Turn left and a good solid path runs east through mixed woodland. The path rises a little along the edge of an open field before descending a fairly steep set of wooden steps where the rumbling of the falls becomes ever louder, confirming your approach. Popular with visitors as far back as the Victorian era, the falls come alive as the Keltie Water squeezes its bubbling torrent through a series of narrow rock channels.
The bridge was washed out in April 2004 and is due to be replaced. You can get close to the most impressive bit of the falls and look down from above but take care, as it is quite a drop and you’ll probably get wet!
According to an internet search some of the film Monty Python’s Holy Grail was filmed here but I didn’t recognise anything, maybe someone else will.
To get to the cache site turn right as you drop down just before where the bridge used to be and follow the vague path around to the south of the falls where you can get a good view. I went down for a paddle and to take photos but I wouldn’t really recommend it unless you’re confident with a good scramble.
GPS reception was appalling, ±22 m at best. Please refer to the spoiler photos, one which shows the cache site and the other the view back towards the falls, it’s higher up than it looks in the picture.
