What a great day for a stroll outside and some relaxing bird watching. I parked on Hadley Grange just by the mail boxes, hoped out the car and walked toward St John’s Sideroad. Once there I turned left onto the newly paved walkway on the northside of St John’s Sideroad heading East.
Out onto the boardwalk I took a brief look at the first lookout over the wetland. The noise was incredible, it sounded like every reed sported a responding frog.
I continued walking along the boardwalk across the McKenzie residence driveway and back onto the boardwalk.
Just before I reached the 5th old Victorian streetlamp, I found another lookout over the water. I leant on the information plaque to read about the Wetland…..what a great find!
Location Background
The McKenzie Marsh is a wildlife sanctuary that has recently, and controversially, undergone a major upheaval when the municipality upgraded St. John's Sideroad to four lanes in the area. People who recognize this road as a major artery are pleased with the outcome, and are comfortable with the wildlife friendly steps that were taken. Some people who were familiar with the wildlife that this marsh supports have noticed a dramatic reduction in it during and following the road upgrade. The common ground in all cases is that ‘what is done is done’ and everyone is hoping that the wildlife returns and that it won’t be necessary to disrupt this Provincially-significant ecological area in the near future.
