This cache is located in a far corner of Fairmont Park. This whole area once belonged to Fairmont Elementary, but has since been turned over to the Department of parks, most of the the many baseball diamonds ripped up, and a public jogging/biking path has been installed around the perimeter. When I was a young'un just a'comin' up, this area was a mass of baseball/softball/kickball diamonds, and we spent many an hour behind the chain-link fence yelling pearls of juvenile wisdom like "we need a pitcher, not a belly-itcher!" (In hindsight, shouldn't that be "belly-SCRATCHER?"). At other times, we'd sit under some long-gone maple trees and either have class outdoors if the weather was nice, or one of the "cool" teachers would bring her acoustic guitar and sing for us (it was the Seventies, people still DID things like that!).
Some time recently, the land was turned over to the Parks Dept., although the school does still use the park at recess, and at those hours (around lunch), the Parks Dept. asks that the public not use the park. Outside of those hours, however, joggers, bikers, and walkers of all ages can be found there, as can the occasional little-league team. Hours of operation are posted, as they are in all of the N.A.-F.C. Parks.
The cache is a camo'ed chewing-tobacco container. It's hidden in a place where lil' mugglers are unlikely to look. Kick one outta the park, fly a kite, or go chase the odd butterfly while you're there, and try to imagine what it looked like when it was packed full of boomer kids. Give yourself an extra 35 bonus points if you show up on a Schwinn Sting-Ray!
