A nice, big, well maintained ammocan along Aldrich Lake full of goodies that kids would enjoy finding.
This cache is our 5 year old son's idea. He picked the hiding spot and has agreed to maintain it himself. The cache container is a large-sized, camouflaged ammo can and is full of great trading items for kids! Dogs are welcome and there are some canine related trading items as well. The trails are a popular dog-walking area for people who live in the Granby Heights Condos. TRADING AT THIS CACHE IS HIGHLY ENCOURAGED BY MY SON! Please be generous in your log entries as he would love to hear from you about his hide! In addition to helping with the ammo can's camouflage, he helped hide and cover this cache as well.
It is hidden near the intersection of 4 well-used, wide foot trails on the north shore of Aldrich Lake - West of Amherst Street. ATV's sometimes use the trail, so always keep an ear open for engines! People may also be fishing in the area.
As you hike to the cache from Amherst Street, you'll notice that the trail appears to have been paved at one time! That is because you are looking at what is left of "Batchelor Street" which at one time used to continue on up the hill. If you walk down to the lake near the cache site, you may also notice the foundations of long-gone cabins & buildings, outdoor wood burning cook ovens, and small stone walls. These are the remains of a Boy Scout camp that used to occupy this area. If you find anything interesting, please post a picture or tell us if you know more about the area's history. If you would like a nice walk, continue on the trail to the Southwest and visit the small dam that created the lake. Nearby is the surviving Aldrich Lake Grist Mill with the remnants of an old water wheel. Parking can be found on either side of Amherst Street near the bridge - many people park here to fish in the area. The trailhead to the cache is to the North about 100 feet away on the West side of the road.
Origninal Cache Contents: 1 Log Book, 2 Echo Microphone Toys, 3 Clip & Bottle Opener Keychains, 3 Dog Toys, 3 Packs Card Games, 2 Glow Sticks, 3 Compass Whistles :) Trading at this cache is highly encouraged!! However, remember that it's designed to be a cache for kids. If you take a neat toy, try to also leave a toy that a kid would want to play with. (i.e. Taking a fun card game and leaving, say, a rusty bottle cap would not be a nice thing for you to do)
