Geocache Description:

Here is another bridge you won’t find on any of the covered bridge routes. This should be an easy find like the other Parke County Bridges I have done. The main intent is to bring you to a beautiful piece of history.

Harry Evans Bridge
Built in 1908 by Joseph A. Britton

Location: Located 1/2 mile northwest of Coxville.

Size: The length of this bridge is 65' +8' +8'. The width is 16' and has 13’ of clearance. It has a Burr Arch 1 span truss and the foundation is concrete.

Bridge History: The Harry Evans Bridge was built by my wife's great-great grandfather, J.A. Britton the same year that he built the Zacke Cox and the Weisner covered bridges.

One former neighbor of the bridge became incensed when he learned that the bridge is now called the Harry Evans Bridge. He said that Harry Evans lived on top of the hill above the bridge and it was originally named for an Evans living in the valley nearer the bridge.

Harry Evans owned the land near the bridge. The land remained in the Evans name through the 1960’s.

The road near the bridge was washed out on numerous occasions. Through the years, a farmer has maintained a ford just west of the bridge.

There are many old dangerous coal mines in the hills near the Harry Evans Bridge. There is a seemingly bottomless air shaft nearby.

The cache is a Lock & Lock container. Please hide it as well or better than you found it. There is a Sacagawea dollar in the cache for the first one to find.
