A BIG rock in a beautiful valley!
A visit to this rock and back is a trip of about 8km/5m from Kentmere village. A lovely walk and easily extendable with many other route options, including a range of summits. The Ull Stone is a big rock, so big that it has a name and is marked on maps! Wonderful views are to be had.
It's big and square and legend has it that it's half of a huge dice, thrown by a disgruntled giant, called Ull, who had lost a bet about some sheep. He threw it from Cockermouth and it landed here in Kentmere. As it landed it split, as you will see if you go behind it. Where the other half is, no one knows.
After further investigation it seems that Ull moved south and lived in Kentmere for a while where, instead of dicing, he took up marbles as a competitive sport with his fellow giants. You will find the remains of his marbles scattered all over the valley.
The walk along the valley is really pleasant, one of the best options being to follow the bridleway along the east side. Limited parking can be found at the top of High Lane or in the village. On busy days (eg fine weekends / holidays) get there early (or late!) if you want a parking spot.
From the Stone it's a fairly easy climb onto the ridge then Kentmere Pike for a high level return route. Or you could continue onto Nan Bield Pass, or head west down an easy slope to the reservoir and return down the valley.
Putting the cache under the stone was tempting but would make it rather easy and it may get disturbed. So it's elsewhere, but within 50m. It is, of course, in some rocks!
If you look closely at the Ull Stone you may be able to see traces of the dots! Have a good trip - and search for some marbles on the way!
