This is a very important Cache for our organization and means a lot to us to be placed here not only for Girl
Scouts but for anyone who has eaten a cookie and sent a girl to camp!
We are going to use the Log books once they are filled in our history archives. Each year the director
has to submit a plan that shows the community importance of this historical monument and they do this by the visitor count. This will increase our
visitor count and preserve a vital part of American History of Women as well as put a cache out for cachers visiting the Savannah, Georgia area.
This Historical monument is usually advertised to Girl Scouts on the guided tours but we want everyone to know who we are and what we stand for.
Juliette Gordon Low, "Daisy," was the founder of the Girl SCouts of America. She came back from England and called all of her friends and said "I have something for the girls of Savannah, the girls of Georgia and for all the girls of the United States." Thus on March 12, 1912 - The first Girl Scout troop in the U.S.A. was registered in Savannah, Georgia, by Juliette Low at the Louisa Porter home. The former carriage house at 330 Drayton St. behind the garden of the Low home became the First Headquarters for the new organization. This building was in continuous use for Girl Scouting from 1912 until 1985.
The First Girl Scout Headquarters building, formerly the carriage house for Juliette Low's adult home, was willed to the Girl Scouts of Savannah, GA, Inc. upon Juliette's death in 1927. The building was in continuous use for Girl Scout Troop activities, adult training, and administrative offices from 1912 until 1985, when the staff moved the Council office to 428 Bull Street. The Junior League of Savannah leased the building while the Council determined how it could be utilized best. On January 15, 1996 the First Headquarters building reopened to the public as a Girl Scout museum, program center and Council shop. It offers exciting interactive educational experiences for Girl Scouts and the community.
