The building of the Carson Colorado narrow gauge railroad, beginning at Mound House in 1880, resulted in the establishment of Hawthorne on April 14, 1881. The town was founded as the Division Head for the primary maintenance of the locomotives and related equipment. The cache is located along the old rail line which was removed in 1905 after the mining boom of Tonopah and Goldfield. Heavy rail traffic made it necessary to standard gauge the line and move the Division Head to the new town of Mina, thereby cutting Hawthorne out of the railroad business. If you want to learn a little more about the CC RR visit the monument at 38 31.555---118 37 354. It is right along the old railroad bed too.
The “First to Find” gets the Sacajawea $1.00 coin. I have found this coin spelled three different ways; depending on what part of the country you are in. In the western United States it is commonly spelled Sacajawea. In Canada it is Sakakawea and in the Dakotas it’s Sacagawea. It’s not surprising that the Government didn’t elect to put her name on the coin.
Cache is a small medicine bottle with room for small items only. An easy find, but be careful of the sharp bush---enjoy.
