Top Of The World is the high point of the Mammoth Mountain Ski Area. In winter, skiers and boarders carve steep and sweet descents like Dave's, Upper Dry Creek, Climax, Hangman's, and Cornice. In summer, mountain bikers brave the world famous Kamikaze Downhill. The summit also offers expansive views for scenic riders. Visit the NFS nature interpretive center downstairs in the gondola building. Added in 2019 is a platform for a (faulty and non-functioning) zipline dropping thousands of feet from the top of the mountain over Chair One to the Main Lodge.
Ski patrol staffs an aid room here. An avalanche rescue dog and their patroller handler is on duty most days during ski season. The first dogs and their handlers were named King (Shane), Chief (Scott) and Atlas (Matt), the dogs are sadly now departed. The newer working dogs are Duke (Nicole), Luna (Kyle), Ritter (Shawn), Bodie (Beth) and Mojo (Tyler). Support Mammoth Mountain's avalanche dog program by purchasing a styling Eastside K-9 tshirt or hoody in the Main Lodge aid room.
The most reasonable approach year round is via the Panorama Gondola lift. Alternatively, in summer months hike the trail from Twin Lakes campground, or bike up Roadrunner cat track.
Placed 4th of July closing day (!) of the 2006 ski season, now the HideAKey container holds a small log. The cache is set unobtrusively. Snow may render it inaccessible in winter. Please rehide it the same way out of view.
PLEASE DO NOT ask ski patrol where the cache is located. Annoy ski patrol and its days are numbered! I have maintained this cache successfully for both riders and sightseers nearly twenty years. Be discreet as you will likely have lots of folks around, and some may be watching from inside. Enjoy!
