In the three years since this cache was placed many logs have
commented on the "Stile". Remember the nursery rhyme,"There was a
crooked man who walked a crooked mile and crossed a crooked fence
on a very crooked stile". --a "STILE" is the ladder over the fence!
You are the Geocaching "Hunter" and your "quarry" is a camoed
plastic bottle, located in a quarry pit which was used by local
builders 150 years ago to obtain Kasota Stone for building, such as
the house and barn you see across the road and in Ottawa. When
enough had been taken the pits were used as dumps for trash, and
also for the field boulders you see today. These are all glacial
boulders and the Kasota stone is sedimentary limestone, dating from
the time of the River Warren and melting glaciers. If you would
like to see some LARGE Kasota stones go across the road to the mail
box. These large stones would be taken from the quarry to the
building site and then cut into smaller stones for building.
Several of the large stones are on the south and west side of the
recently restored Barn. Note also, how close the Minnesota River
comes to this draw. Note: This is posted Private Land, and we have
the permission of John Chamberlain, the owner, to use this Geocache
Site. You may also enjoy the adjacent restored prairie north of the
pit..
