Geocache Description:

First stage is traditional micro. But hey, look across the road, does that rock look like a T-Rex?

200 years ago farmers cleared mature Oak, Hickory, and American Chestnut forest to make room for farms. Early immigrants to Warren County raised crops for themselves and their livestock.

In the 1800's intensive grain farming depleted the soil. Farmers discovered that limestone, which is found throughout Warren and Sussex counties could temporarily restore soil fertility after it was properly burned and slaked. They would slake the limestone after it was heated in the kiln by placing it in bags and depositing them in the river (early geocachers?). This changed the composition of the limestone. Farmers then spread the lime on the soil to help crops grow. Lime kilns sprang up on almost every farm as farmers utilized this great resource. Limestone is no longer burned. Today it is crushed by machines for a variety of uses. Abondonded lime kilns (like this one, last used in the 1930's) are great habitiat for a variety of plants and animals.

While you're here, be sure to visit the Pequest Fish Hatchery and utilize the hiking trails in the immediate area.
