Deerfield Park was developed back in the 70's. It was designed to
be a destination ski resort here in the Black Hills. The cache sits
near the location of this dream.
Snowfall studies were done to determine the most suitable location
for a nice little ski slope in the Hills. This was the location
that they picked. Its not 3000 vertical feet, but a beautiful spot,
nontheless. Trees were cleared, roads built, even a lift system was
erected.
Then came the Savings and Loan scandals of the era. People went
bankrupt, money ran out, plans were changed. Much of the land was
auctioned off and is now in the hands of private owners.
The ski slope and its lift sytem remain. The top of the lift can be
seen from about 100' due west of the cache site that is on forest
service land. The old lift is on private property, as is all of the
slopes and the lake below.
You can view the slope from many locales in the area. The best spot
is from the Leisure Hills subdivision off of Deerfield Road.
The best access to the cache site is to take East Slate Road (300)
off of Deerfield Road (17) and then follow 300 1G (at N43°
59.191 W103 42.078) around the backside of the mountain. This
little forest service road eventually dead-ends, but there is a
small parking area and turnaround spot at at (N43° 59.601 W103
42.616).
This road may only be suitable for higher clearance vehicles but
4WD is not necessary.
At the parking coordinates, there is a ridge line that heads
straight to the cache. It is steep and more than 1/4 mile off
trail.
The ammo can sits nestled among the rocks at what I would consider
the peak of this hill.
