Geocache Description:

Parking @ N51° 36.065 W001° 17.246

Once parked head down ‘Townsend’

The A34 linking Drayton to Chilton has now been here for nearly 30 years, but before then Harwell was a thriving, fruit growing village, some people used to describe Harwell as the ‘Market Garden of Kent’.

Fruit growing has always been a part of Harwell’s history; the cherry orchards are certainly documented as Harwell’s best known feature in the early 1900’s. Over more recent years this has diminished with more and more farms uprooting their fields of trees.

The area that the A34 occupies now is about half way between Harwell village and Didcot town (and if planning goes ahead may be surrounded by more homes). The areas that were sacrificed for the road were orchards, most of them being cherries.

In the summer the Harwell cherries are well worth a taste and can be bought from the Grove farm shop just outside the village, at the end of the Grove road on the A4130.

The cache uses local footpaths that are clearly marked on the OS map, and these areas are popular with local dog walkers so watch out for muggles.

Special Notes:
· Part of the route to and from the cache is a footpath which runs next to but above the A34 and the footpath is separated from the A34 by a drainage ditch please ensure dogs are kept on a lead and children do not cross the ditch, as there is no need!
· Return journey: You may wish to retrace your steps to the car – particularly if you have dogs or young children. However you could continue and complete what is part of a circular walk back to the car and visit aonther one of our caches 'Fruit and Nut'. The footpath is currently little used and would benefit from regular use to keep the walking route defined and the greenery at bay!
· Keep following the A34 until you come to a style, once over the style and onto the road it runs parallel with your original route.
