Geocache Description:

Placed at Slievenaslat viewpoint in Castlewellan Forest Park. You can park within the Forest Park or in the town. Various paths lead you to the top of Slievenaslat with some steep and sometimes slippery ascents.

Slievenaslat (270metres) is the highest point in Castlewellan Forest Park and provides panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. Slievenaslat means ‘hill of the twigs or reeds’ and the viewpoint offers a magnificent view of the Mountains of Mourne as they sweep down to the sea.

There are several trails which lead you to the viewpoint so you might want to try the Slievenaslat Trail (7.6 km) or the Boundary Walk if you’re feeling even more energetic.

Castlewellan Forest Park covers about 450 hectacres and was sold to the Ministry of Agriculture in 1967 by the Annesley family . It contains many interesting features including the Castle which was built in 1856, several lakes, and a Moorish tower. There is also an internationally renowned Arboreteum, dating from 1860 and the birthplace of the ubiquitous conifer ‘Castlewellan Gold’.

The newest attraction is the Peace Maze, opened in 2001, and officially the largest permanent hedge maze in the world.
