Geocache Description:

ERRATIC ROCKS - a series.
Named stones on OS maps. See: Gray Bull for a description of the series, although now rather defunct.

Galloway Stone: A named boulder south of Shap, near the motorway – large and a good shape!

This is another example of a prominent rock in the Shap area and across the valley from Gray Bull. The name suggests this has come from southern Scotland. There’s a lot of limestone around here, but plenty of granite boulders of all shapes and sizes.

This stone is not as peaceful as many others as it’s very near the north-bound carriageway of the M6. The OS thought it was a handy rock – you should have no problem finding the benchmark.

Down the road is the small village of Orton with some excellent refreshment facilities!

The cache is simply hidden next to the boulder. Not much room for swaps! Enjoy the windswept wildness.
