This railroad siding was created when Southern Pacific decided to standardize the track between Mound house and Mina during 1903 and 04. The track was changed from a 3 ft. wide narrow gauge line to a standard track which is 4 ft. 81/2 inches wide. The change was made necessary due to the heavy shipment requirements into Tonopah during the big silver boom.
These changes resulted in Hawthorne being bypassed and the big curve being eliminated with the last train running into Hawthorne on August 6, 1905. Freight was off loaded here and transported into Hawthorne via horse drawn wagons and early day vehicles. They were then distributed from there to Lucky Boy, Aurora, Bodie and other local area mining camps.
Thorne, whose name is derived from Hawthorne, had a post office from July 12, 1912 until September 30, 1921 when the mail was again handled by the Hawthorne office.
The small town hung on for about a half of a century, reaching its peak during World War II. This level of activity was reached due to heavy munition shipments from the nearby Naval Amunition Depot. A few homes were built or moved in but most workers lived in trailers on site. The train station was in full operation until the mid fifties and eventually torn down by SP crews.
The cache is not on railroad property but located nearby. You might also note the "War Game Paint Ball" site nearby.
First to find wins the Sacajawea coin. An easy cache; enjoy.
