Geocache Description:

The McAllister Bridge is on both the Red and Black Parke County Bridge Routs. This bridge also sits in close proximity to 3 other covered bridges. It should be an easy find like the other Parke County Bridges I have done. The main intent is to bring you to a beautiful piece of history.

McAllister Bridge
Built in 1914 by Joseph A. Britton

Location: Located 5 1/2 miles southeast of Rockville.

Size: The length of this bridge is 126' +9' +9'. The width is 16' with 14' of clearance. It has a Burr Arch 1 span truss. The foundation is concrete.

Bridge History: James D. McAllister, born in 1854, owned the large Fairview Hill Farm near the McAllister Bridge. It is possible to see Neet, McAllister, and Crooks covered bridges at the same time in winter. From a bird’s eye view, Nevins could also be seen.

This bridge was built during the height of J.A. Button’s bridge building career. His sons were providing the bulk of the labor. J.A. Britton was 77 years old when the McAllister Bridge was completed. J.A. Britton went on to build the Marshall Bridge in 1917 and the Nevins Bridge in 1920. J.A. Britton was 83 during the building of the Nevins Bridge and lived until the age of 91.

The bridge has a galvanized steel roof. It has several noticeable repairs reinforced by steel. The abutments are wider than the ends of the bridge which are instead supported with reverse kingposts.

The portal credits include J.M. May, J.L. Linebarger, W.M. Mottern, Commissioners, J. Elder, Auditor, J.H. Rush, Treasurer, H. L. Davies, Engineer, J.A. Britton, Builder, 1914.

The cache is a 50 caliber ammo box. Please hide it as well or better than you found it. There is a Sacagawea dollar in the cache for the first one to find.

Both the Winningham Boys and Team BubbyMac have had caches near this bridge in the past that came up missing. Hopefully this one will last a little longer.
