Geocache Description:

ERRATIC ROCKS - a series.
Named stones on OS maps. See: Gray Bull for a description of the series.

THE COP STONE: A named boulder on the northern end of High Street – a good size stone with a tooth like aspect.

Askham Fell is the wide, flat area at the northern end of the High Street ridge.  A handy road runs up from Helton onto the moor.  A Roman road once ran over the hills and the area is dotted with stones, circles and other features from an even earlier time.  The stones are complimented by numerous ‘shake holes’ – conical depressions associated with limestone, often home to rabbits here.

The Cop Stone is a good example of a standing stone.  A little further on is a small stone circle.  SW of the circle is a deep shake hole in which the cache can be found.  Enjoy the fell and the wide-open spaces.  Please re-hide the cache well – thanks.

A little way to the WNW is The Cockpit, a low but impressive stone circle.  See Moor Divock for more info about this area.  There are some more stones north of the cache - the Hag Stones.  It's an easy walk up to Heughscar Hill for even better views.

If you need refreshment, Askham has a very good shop and a couple of pleasant pubs.  To the south is Bampton which has a post office/tea room and a good pub.
