This cache has been archived.

martlakes: There are some really stupid idiots out there. Well I'm fed up dealing with their actions so I'm giving up with this one.
Thanks to all those who have visited and enjoyed this over the many years. Shame to let the arseholes win but life's too short to worry about it.
Bye bye Goggleby.

Geocache Description:

ERRATIC ROCKS - a series.
Named stones on OS maps. See: Gray Bull for a description of the series.

THE GOGGLEBY STONE: A large named boulder, part of the Shap complex of circles, standing stones and avenues.

According to various sources the Shap complex was a major area of arranged stones. It has apparently suffered a lot of change and destruction over the centuries and many features are now hard to pick out. The main rocks are still very much in evidence, and the best known is the Goggleby Stone.

The Goggleby Stone is 12 tons of rock sticking up in a field behind the village of Shap. It's an impressive rock. The cache is near the stone, in the next field. The main street provides easy parking with few restrictions or try the back lane. A short circuit can be made across the field to the stone and back to the village.

There's quite a lot of info available about the area. See Shap.

Shap used to be the main route north and has a fascinating history often associated with its transport role of both trains and road. It's an interesting village even today, although trains no longer stop at the closed station and the M6 speeds most people straight past. It is on the Coast-to-Coast route, has several good shops, (inc, a New Balance 'factory' shop if you fancy some trainers!), a heated outdoor pool, a great village hall, a chip shop/cafe, a Co-op and a couple of pubs. It has seen a bit of a renaissance in the last few years, probably helped by the property boom elsewhere and an increasing willingness to commute. It also has an unusual market hall on the main street.

Please re-hide the cache with subtlety – thanks.

We hope you enjoy exploring Shap and its stones.
