Aunt Nellie's Arbor Cache
Please note Use of geocaching.com services is subject to the terms and conditions
in our disclaimer.
Named after our Aunt Nellie, a Wilmot and relative of the original Samuel Wilmot after whom this creek and park was named, this cache treks along between the Wilmot Creek valley, the meadow, and Lake Ontario to the south. Lots of birds, butterflies, and, usually, a few fishermen.
While you are here, you can also do "Return of the Osprey" (GCWRFH), a cache by cache addicts.
Parking is south of Highway 2 on Cobbledick Road, at
N 43 54.131 and W 078 36.335
Follow the trail through the Newcastle Memorial Forest and head south toward the first microcache, past the Salix nigra. NOTE that all co-ordinates DO NOT lead directly to the caches but to the nearest spot along the trail. Once you get to each co-ordinate, use the clue to move off the trail to find the caches. The caches are between 5m and 35m from the trail at the given co-ordinates, mostly at the closer end of that scale.
Each microcache contains 2 of the numbers to help fill in the co-ordinates for the final cache. You get 5 micros to make up the 10 unknown digits in the final cache's co-ordinates.
Trails down near the lake lead to a viewing platform over the Wilmot Creek, and to Lake Ontario itself right where the Wilmot, a superb fishing creek, empties into the Lake. There are usually fishermen about, and their trails are everywhere, so don't assume a grassy trail leads to a cache. It might lead to steep hill and the Wilmot Creek. Another trail loops through the meadow and back to the main trail. It is nice up on the top of the bluffs, near another viewing site, but keep youngsters and pets away from the edge. It is a fair way down to the Lake.
All microcaches are film spools. They are VERY CLOSE to the structures whose proper names ARE the clues. The final cache is large enough for a log, pencil, and small tradeables or TB's/geocoins. Please sign the log. The length of this trek is close to 2km, and, with 6 total caches, it requires some time to complete. Bicycles should work fine too.
