This meadow is one of the highlights of the White Pine Trail. The Trail has wildflowers from start to finish, but they are especially thick and beautiful here. In spring and early summer the meadow is a riot of wildflowers -- lupine, wild geranium, forget-me-not, scarlet gilia, wild rose, larkspur, Indian paintbrush, columbine, penstemon, buttercup, mint, and a lot of other flowers I don't know the names of. The display changes as the summer continues, but there is always something blooming.
The trail levels out here for the first time. You can look around and enjoy the flowers as you catch your breath from the steady (but fairly easy) climb.
This hike enters a region of the forest neighboring Mt. Naomi Wilderness. While neither the hike nor the lakes are in designated wilderness areas, the U.S.F.S. generally manages them under wilderness restrictions.
A $15 fee (2020: $10; 2017: $7) may be collected for parking at the Tony Grove Lake Area parking lot. If you have the National Parks pass, the fee is waived (according to the rangers at the USFS Info Center in Logan.) There is a latrine at the start of the hike, but no drinking water.
