Dugort Bay Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Pat&Rascal: I had hoped an offer to adopt this cache would pan out. Unfortunately this fell through.

Since ill health prevents me from maintaining the cache any longer, I have reluctantly to archive it. Sorry folks!

Geocache Description:

This is a roadside cache. It should be accessible by almost anyone.

The cache is a 5x5x10cm rectangular tablock container with a logbook and pencils. It should be easy to find and was left to encourage people to visit a location of which I have become very fond.

Achill Island in West Mayo Ireland, is a superb place to visit. Unfortunately most visitors to the island rush headlong along the "Achill Motorway" to Keem Bay at the western end of the island and miss the other interesting places that the island offers. Dugort Beach is one of the best beaches anywhere in Ireland and a visit to this cache will give the searcher a chance to see it.

The cache is situated at the foot of Slieve More, a superb climb for those who are so inclined. From the road fork behind the Strand Hotel, head for the ridge and follow the path to the summit.

Please note: the mountain is often shrouded in mist which can descend without warning. It has precipices which can kill. If you are unfamiliar with climbing in Ireland take local advice before attempting this climb. Do so at your own risk!

Other interesting points of interest on Achill include the Deserted Village, on the western slopes of Slieve More and Keem Bay, at the western end of the island. Both these locations have caches nearby. Croaghaun is the highest mountain on the island (at 688 metres it towers over Slieve More by 16 metres!).

Most people attribute the highest sea cliffs in Western Europe to those at Slieve League in South Donegal. In fact the cliffs on the north side of Croaghaun are over 90 metres higher, but they can only be seen from the summit, or from the south end of Belmullet penninsula.

Being 61 years old now(May 2010), I remember when you could see the night sky and The Milky Way even in a city as big as Belfast, where I was born. Sadly these days, places where you can see the night sky are rare. Dugort has only a few low power street lights and is many miles from the nearest town. On a clear night you can see the full splendour of the night sky and The Milky Way. The starlight is usually bright enough to search for my cache!

Now that the cache has been relocated, imagined smells perceived by some searchers should be reduced :-)
