East Lothian Woodland Walks 7a: Saltoun Northings Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Jack Aubrey: It's a mystery that this cache has become so difficult to find after years of no problems! Whatever the reason, there are now plenty of other caches in the wood and it's time this trio left the scene and stopped annoying people!

Geocache Description:

This cache can be logged separately but also contains the northings of the co-ordinates for the main Saltoun Big Wood cache (GCX3H5). The westings are in Woodland Walks 7b(GCX6TJ), which is in "another part of the forest".

Park at N55.53.433 W002.51.440 as listed on the main cache page. There are marked trails through the wood and you can find all three caches using these paths.

The cache is in a clear area at the corner of a field. The small rise in the field ahead is the summit of the Skimmer Hills, crowned by a monument visible above the crops when in growth. The Skimmer Hills Monument marks the highest point in Saltoun Parish and of the Saltoun Estates, which were the property of the Fletcher family. The monument was built around 1850 and the Fletchers flew a flag from here to mark the top point of their lands.

The northings are pasted inside the lid of the cache box.
