Savenac Geocache Multi-Cache
reforestgrrl: This one has had a great run and it’s been wonderful to share this cool historic site with other geocachers. Given the extended length of time that it will be unavailable, however, I think it’s time to archive it.

Savenac Nursery is located just off I-90 at exit 16 (next door to the Silver $). Savenac Tree Nursery was established in 1907 and was in operation by the USDA Forest Service for approximately 60 years. During that time, up to 3 million seedlings were producted annually for reforestation in the region. Many of the buildings you'll see here were built by the CCC in the 1930s. The statue of "Iron Mike" in front of the Visitor Center is a tribute to the CCC workers. The goal is for each state to have one of these statues; this is the one for MT. The nursery has been restored and is now a National Historic Site which is used for environmental education, weddings, and other community events. Much of the restoration work at Savenac was completed by PIT Volunteers. If you want a good excuse to travel across the country (geocaching along the way, of course), visit www.passportintime.com. To complete this cache, go to the posted coordinates and record the names of the two tree species from the signs. Take your answers to the Visitor Center and tell the person at the counter, "I have completed my cone quest! The tree species are _______ and _______." You will then be given the cache. There is a Savenac magnet for the FTF. The Visitor Center is open Memorial Day through Labor Day, 10am to 6pm, every day of the week. We encourage you to take the interpretive trail and tour the nursery grounds. Picnic tables and restrooms are available.
