Geocache Description:

The theme of this cache is for a recreational swim team that has been part of the Roseville community and history for over 40 years.
Some Brief History

In 1965, thirty swimmers met at Roseville High School Pool and began the first competitive swim program in Roseville.
In 1967, the team adopted the "SUGARBEARS" as the team mascot and team name.
The team's very first coach, Bob Jellison's nickname was Sugarbear.
The urban legend is that Bob resembled the Sugar Bear character from Post Cereal and he may have picked up the name as a boxer in college at Chico.

In 1976, the team moved from Roseville High School to the newly built Oakmont Pool Complex, where the program still resides today.

Over the years, the Sugarbears have had many successful seasons and accomplishments.
A notable era is from 1987 to 2000, when the team was both dual meet and league Champions under the guidance of Head Coach John MacLeane.

Coupled with success has been tragedy. In 1975, an outstanding swimmer and team leader from Roseville, Paul Clotfelter, died in his prime due to a terminal disease. Each year, the team honors an outstanding member of the Roseville Swim Team who epitomizes all that is good and outstanding as an athlete and as an individual. This award bears the name the "PAUL CLOTFELTER MEMORIAL AWARD", and is truly special to receivers.

Some other notable Sugarbear swimmers in the team's history are Summer Sanders and Randy Fasani.
Summer Sanders became the most decorated U.S. swimmer in the 1992 Summer Olympics, winning two gold medals, a silver medal, and a bronze medal.
Summer still holds the Sugarbear team record for the 6&Under Girls 25 Free. A 17.60 from July 1979.

Randy Fasani went on to become a Quarterback in the NFL and still holds three Sugarbear team and three VFCAL Champ Meet records.
Randy currently works as a police officer for the City of Roseville.

In 1995, Sugarbear swim parent Mike Rapozza took the first initiative in creating the Woodcreek Seawolves swim team, which operates from the Roseville Aquatics Complex.
In 2005, the Sugarbears further expanded into Granite Bay, with the creation of the Granite Bay Gators swim team.

The Woodcreek Seawolves and Granite Bay Gators are viewed as an extension to the Sugarbear family.
There has only been one other team to win a league (VFCAL) championship outside of this formidable triad since 1987!
