Mounds State Park, near Chesterfield, has eleven mounds and earthworks built around 150 B.C. by the Adena and Hopewell cultures. Don't miss the "Great Mound" just a short walk from the park entrance. Several hiking trails, ranging in difficulty from easy to moderate, wind their way throughout the park. A new nature center as well as camping and picnic facilities and a bridle path for horseback riding provide for additional activities.
There are currently four other caches within the park. This one, just off trail number 3, will take you to a scenic view high above the White River. Foliage will challenge your satellite reception and play tricks on you during the summer, so be advised to turn on your GPSr while you're still in an open area. Terrain difficulty varies with the route you take. The closest parking is at N40 06.124 W085 37.097, but the park staff have since closed off the trail behind the shelter that led directly to it, so you're now on your own to find your way to trail number 3. There is no need to bushwhack, and stay on the main trail until you're within 65 feet of the cache. Keep a close eye on children while searching.
You must pay a state park entrance fee during warm weather; it's free during the off season.
