The Newquay Harbour incline tunnel.
Opened in 1849 the Newquay harbour branch run from the station
through the middle of Newquay before being winched down the incline
tunnel to the harbour. The top entrance of the tunnel was located
in what is now the Safeway carpark. On the harbour, lines run along
the quay and over a wooden trestle pier to the central island
quay.
All wagon movements on the branch were horse drawn apart from the
incline which had stationary steam engine powered winches. Traffic
included sand, fertiliser, coal, timber and china clay. The last
recorded load was in 1922 and the GWR closed the branch in 1926.
The lower portal was used in later years to house an aquariam,
Nowdays it is used to house the gigs for Newquay rowing club.
The cache is a small tupperware box located near the portal, but
finding it will be easy as opposed to being able to retrieve it
unseen with all the activites and muggles that abound at this busy
location.
I strongly suggest an early morning or late evening visit to
attempt this one. Also due to the where it is hidden please do NOT
leave TRAVELBUGS or GEOCOINS in this cache.
Please ensure you are not seen retrieving or replacing the cache
and please ensure it is hidden well.
Good luck
