"INDIANA SPIRIT
QUEST"
The Indiana Spirit Quest series of
geocaches will take you to a number of historic sites and
cemeteries built by Hoosier Pioneers. In three years, the quest
has grown to over five hundred fifty caches hidden in Indiana,
Ohio, Michigan, and Ontario and the hiders have grown to over
thirty cacher teams. Over 1,000 cacher teams
had logged over 25,000 finds when we quit
counting.

INDIANA SPIRIT QUEST
#561
"REMEMBERING RUSTY"
"The fidelity of a
dog is a precious gift demanding no less than the friendship of the
human being. The bond with a true dog is as lasting as the ties of
this earth can ever be."
- Konrad Lorenz
This is a brother cache to our Remembering
Maggie cache (GCMYP8). Rusty was a handsome Golden Retriever who
had a heart as big as the sky. When his quiet bachelor life with
his daddy, Mr. Car54, changed into one that included a mommy who
brought with her a Border Collie named Maggie, two grown kids and a
granddaughter, Rusty welcomed each new member of his pack with
love. We said goodbye to Rusty a year ago at the age of 10 or 11
(like all our dogs, Rusty was a rescue, so his age was
approximate). In honor of Rusty and the joy he brought to our
lives, this cache has been placed along a trail that he would have
loved.
Your Quest will start at the Historical
Marker devoted to General Samuel Milroy. Milroy was the son of a
Revolutionary War Patriot and moved to Carroll County in 1866 and
built a log cabin at this site. He was the founder of the county
and platted Delphi in 1828. The stairs by the marker lead to a
memorial monument to the Pioneers of the County, on the spot where
the cabin stood.
Please note the two different parking
coordinates. If you want to enjoy a nice walk of about 1.25 miles
round trip on a level gravel path, start at the hike parking
co-ords. If you feel like a cache-and-dash, start at the close
parking co-ords. In either case, enter the cache hunt area via the
stairs by the Milroy Historical Marker. Once you walk up the short
path to the concrete monument, you'll need to bushwhack the last 40
feet or so (rated - long pants). The co-ords are an average of a
Garmin and a Magellan reading, which were very close to each other.
However, the tree cover prevented either unit from getting a WAAS
signal, so feel free to post alternate co-ords with your log. The
container is a standard ammo can and when you open it, you will see
a magnet of Rusty on the lid, watching over his
cache

The cache container is an
ammo can. BYOP. The cache is not located near a grave...Do not
disturb monuments. If you find a fallen US flag, please stick it
back in the ground. You must sign the cache log to claim a find. As
always, please be respectful, and cache in, trash
out.
