Geocache Description:

A little two-part cache to introduce you to some of the history of Old Miakka and west central Florida

When Indians still inhabited this region, a half mile north of this location was the original log structure where church services were held by circuit riding preachers. School was held there during the week. After the donation of this land by Gus Wilson (who served as a State Senator) and William Rawls, this church and cemetery were constructed in the late 1800’s. Following the Civil War the Homestead Act opened up this area for settlers and brought in the railroads and brought about the location of John Crowley’s first blacksmith shop.

This cache will bring you to a historical marker just outside the Old Miakka Cemetery where many of the early settlers to the area of Old Myakka City were buried. This place has a firm grip on some of the earliest history of this region and here you will find the names of the founding families of this area of Florida such as the Crowleys and the Tatums. Respect all the resting places if you tour the grounds and take in the history that surrounds you. If muggles are around be sure to practice your best respectful stealth as you seek this cache.

When you are reading the historical marker you will need to note a few pieces of historical information. Your only required task is to determine how many years there were between when the cemetery and church were built and when the one room school house was built. Take that number and plug it in the following formula to find the coordinates to the final part of this cache :

N27 18.(945 + YEARS) W82 16.(051 – YEARS)

Be sure to note in the North part you ADD and the West part you SUBTRACT.

This will lead you to a micro cache which only contains a log so bring your own pen and walk around the cemetery to get to it. Be sure to hide this cache back as good as you found it and be careful when retrieving it and replacing in. The cemetery is open for viewing as it is a historical location and be sure you practice complete and total respect if you tour it. These original settlers survived the weather, the heat, the bugs and the challenges without cell phones, computers, air conditioning or GPS’s. Was a tougher bunch of people then, hopefully visiting this spot will give you a little stronger stance and quicker pace to your step in respect for those who came before us and carved the way for us to live here.

Enjoy the spot and respect the moment,
IMPG

Oh yeah, just an added note that makes this a special cache to me is this was my 100th hide!!!!
