Geocache Description:

This cache is one for the history buffs and is located in a park right in what used to be the middle of the Lithgow, or near enough anyhow.

THIS CACHE IS LOCATED IN A HISTORICAL AREA AND HAS MANY AREAS THAT COULD BE HAZARDOUS IF TREATED WITH CONTEMPT. KEEP GEOKIDDIES CLOSE BY AND USE CAUTION WHILE WALKING AROUND THIS AREA. THE CACHE IS LOCATED IN A SAFE AREA NOT TOO FAR FROM THE INFORMATION SIGNS.

The cache is a micro in an area where we would generally consider placing a regular, but due to the amount of muggle activity around the area we decided a micro may be the better way to go. This of course may get changed in the future. The difficulty rating is 3 due to muggle activity other wise it should not cause too much trouble.

Now for a short history lesson. Lithgow is the birth place of Australia’s steel industry and is where Australia’s first blast furnace was built. Whilst this is not the exact site of where the first steel was produced in Australia this is one of the sites where you can see a surviving relic of Australia's early iron and steel industry. The area comprises of ruins including large brick structures, a network of underground tunnels and the base of one of Australia's first blast furnaces’. The first steel produced in Australia, was apparently at the site now occupied by the Marjorie Jackson sporting complex (Lithgow soccer fields).

The relics around this site were in use right up until operations were transferred to Port Kembla in 1928.

Take time to walk around the area and read the information plaques which are informative and if this wets your appetite there is more information on the subject on the internet, at the Lithgow library and various other sources of correspondence.
