Geocache Description:

Tourne Park is one of New Jersey's, The Garden State’s gems, currently embracing 546.9 acres, including a wildflower trail with nearly 250 species of native plants. The highlight of a trip to Tourne Park continues to be the view from the top, where you can enjoy a panoramic view of the New York City skyline. Besides offering hiking trails, traversing hills strewn with huge granite boulders, there are picnic sites, equestrian trails, ball fields, and in the winter, cross-country skiing.

The name "Tourne" is derived from the Dutch word meaning "lookout" or "Mountain". This rugged and beautiful park, is also the only remaining undeveloped fragment of the Great Boonton Tract. It was originally purchased by David Ogden, who served as colonial attorney general of New Jersey in 1759. McCaffrey Lane, the main road leading into the park, was built in 1767 by his son Samuel Ogden to haul iron ore from the nearby Hibernia mines to his ironworks in Old Boonton, where he manufactured cannonballs for the Continental Army during the American Revolution.

Much of this land, now known as Tourne Park was inherited and acquired by Clarence Addington DeCamp in the late 1850s. Using hand tools and levers, DeCamp built two roads leading to the top of the Tourne. He became one of Morris County, New Jersey's first conservationists, encouraged people to hike and enjoy the outdoors.
