Please note Use of geocaching.com services is subject to the terms and conditions
in our disclaimer.
The above coordinates are NOT for the location of the cache site. They are for the entrance to the public car park in Kettlewell. This cache is another of my series on or close to the Dales Way.
The Dales Way is a picturesque walk of about 81 miles starting in Ilkley and finishing in Bowness on Windemere. The Dales Way is predominantly a valley walk following sections of the rivers Wharfe, Dee, Lune, Mint, Sprint and Kent but also includes some higher levels section as it crosses the head of valley's.
Kettlewell in a picturesque village in Wharfedale and has been the setting for several films/Tv programmes including more recently the Calendar Girls. The village hosts a Scarecrow Festival over a 9 day period each August (2007 it is 11-19th) and this attracts thousands of visitors. For more information about the village please visit www.kettlewell.info but do not be tempted to cheat by using the internet to solve the clues to the questions below which when solved will give the co-ordinates to the actual cache location.
In order to identify the cache location have a stroll around the village and find the answers to the questions shown and substitute the numbers into the partially completed co-ordinates as follows:
Actual cache location is N54 08.ABC W002 03.DEF
A & D - Find Cam Cottage and note the date over the door - it is up the side road by the Blue Bell. Add the last 2 digits of a 4 digit year to find A. Add the first and the last digits to find D.
B - Find the year where a spring month merges with an Eastern European and look high. Try the Maypole!. The 3rd digit is required for B.
C - Find Damside House and record the year beside WDB. Up the road opposite the village store. The last of the 4 digits will provide C.
E & F - Find a place dedicated to 'Dodie' and record the years. The 2nd and 3rd digits of 'her' final year will solve E & F. Sit down near the telephone box. You are now ready to seek the cache.
The cache box is a 1 lire tupperware style box marked with a geocaching.com sticker and containing a log book, pencil, pen, sharpener, cache card and FTF card. It also contains a Geocoin, red pepper soft toy, small soft bear, small picture frame, xmas decoration, small lock and keys, carabiner key ring.
The cache owner would like this cache to become a geocoin exchange so if you take a coin out please leave a coin in the cache.
The walk around Kettlewell is easy going on tarmac but the final 200 metres in the approach to the cache site is steeper hence the grade 4.
