Shepherds Well Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

ZED!: If anyone is interested I shall explain my action today.

As indicated by my 16-Oct-2010 log, I've been thinking of moving this box to another location for quite a while. Truthfully I've never really been happy with where I put it but I wanted to draw attention to the locality considering the role the well and homestead played in some of Western Australia's early history.

It was about the 5th geocache I hid so I was very raw and I may at a later date resurrect it as an offset multi because the area is deserving of a geocache. I just need to find a decent place to hide the box, one that is more secluded and not frequented by bottle smashing louts.

Geocache Description:

Goomalling, gateway to the Golden Pathway.

The name "Goomalling" was derived from the Koomal Possum which inhabited the area when the district was first established in the Wongamine area in the late 1830's.

There are 3 historic sites here, The Shepherds Grave, Historic Well and the Old Slater Homestead.

The Shepherds Grave
(lies 50m uphill from the posted coordinates)
This monument stands on land that was once heavily timbered. John Bently who died around 1880 lies buried here by his own wish in the paddock he cleared.

Old Slater Homestead and Well
(Well coordinates provided but both can be seen from GZ)
The well provided water in the latter part of the 19th century for travellers to the goldfields when the nearby old Slater Homestead was used as a wayside inn. The homestead was built soon after surveyor Austin journeyed through this area in 1854. The explorer John Forrest set out from some of his expeditions from here. Bailey and Ford who discovered gold in Coolgardie stopped off here.
