Team Falling Numerals: According to the Cassowary Council the road to GZ is closed due to a landslip.
Refer below for media release from Council on the status of the road. We suspect any repairs will be quite some time away.

March 15, 2019 - Ella Bay Range landslip works

Cassowary Coast Regional Council is awaiting the final design details from a geotechnical engineer on the work and specifications required to repair a landslip on the Ella Bay Road near Flying Fish Point, east of Innisfail.

Mayor John Kremastos said the process of obtaining funding and planning the repair work took time and he thanked the community for its patience.

“We have had to install a locked gate at the start of the range on Ella Bay Road about 500 metres past Seafarm Queensland to prevent traffic from passing the unsafe landslip,” Cr Kremastos said.

The landslip occurred in the March 2018 flood event and Council has had to go through the process of seeking and achieving Government funding through the Natural Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangements process to rectify the slip site.

“It all takes time and we hope people can appreciate that. Once the design is finalised, Council will engage a contractor to undertake the necessary works.

“The locked gate and sign explaining there has been a landslip are there solely to keep people out of danger and we hope they understand this. We will reopen the road as soon as the work is completed and it is safe to travel on.”

Geocache Description:

Ella Bay - near Innisfail. Enjoy a walk along the beach.

**** REGRETFULLY WE MUST ARCHIVE THIS CACHE ****

We popped by to do some maintenance and discovered that the Ella Bay Road is currently closed due to a landslide. Unfortunately Cassowary Council is applying for grant funding to repair the road but there is no schedule on when the road will be repaired and opened to traffic.

We absolutely love this part of our local region but feel that we cannot leave the cache in place for the time being due to the access difficulties. We will keep an eye on the progress of the road repairs and if possible place another cache in the area.

Enjoy a 500m walk along a secluded beach 11.5km northeast of Innisfail. At the northern end of Flying Fish Point you need to follow the roadsigns pointing to Ella Bay. A gravel road winds northwards through the rainforest. This road is suitable for a conventional car.

At approx 500m from the cache location you should start to look for somewhere to park as a locked gate not much further on will prevent you from driving further north. There are some parking bays located approx 450m from the location.

The cache is located well above the high water mark approximately 4m into the bush behind the beach.

The cache is a PVC container that initially holds a logbook, pencils, pen, pencil sharpener, roll of black PVC tape, 4 Indian bracelets, a small occy strap, a galvanised shackle, a nice shiney snap lock clip, a plastic keyring speed clip and 5 cable ties.
