Monserate Mystique Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Snake & Rooster: It's time to archive it and let someone else do a hide up here. The cache and the summit log have "traded places" once before. The fire that ran through here a few years ago destroyed most of the vegetation and hiding places. I'm actually surprised the cache made it this long. Let the ammo can remain as the summit log--I suspect the original coffee cans used for the summit log were destroyed. If someone else would like to try a hide up here, it is an excellent spot, but try to keep well clear of the boulders and summit log area.

Geocache Description:

A scenic hike up Monserate Mountain, with an ammo can at the end

Monserate Mountain is the dominant terrain feature along I-15 between Oceanside and Fallbrook. While parts of its lower elevations are private property, the Fallbrook Land Conservancy owns most of it.

The Preserve was acquired from Heights of Pala Mesa LLC, a partnership headed by Vince Ross who had planned to built houses there after holding the land for over 20 years. In an act of responsible citizenship, the partnership transferred the property to the Conservancy to be used as a mitigation bank. A mitigation bank is used by developers of environmentally sensitive land elsewhere, who can receive permission for development on those lands by purchasing equivalently-sensitive land in this parcel.

The Conservancy has opened the mountain to hikers, between dawn and dusk, and it has become a popular spot for weekend hikers. There are a number of well-marked trails running through the preserve. The trail to the summit will lead you to this cache.

Since it is a preserve, please stay on the marked trails. No bushwhacking is required to reach this cache. The cache is located within 150 feet of the summit's benchmark, and is located in a small nook just off the trail. Please re-hide it well to protect it from muggle hikers.
