This theory supposed that all substances were made by combining different mixtures of just four elements. These elements are AIR, EARTH, FIRE and WATER. For hundreds of years, alchemists tried to change ordinary metals into gold. They never succeeded, but in their quest, they invented many useful devices and techniques that became the foundation for the study of modern chemistry.
