Watch for cows on the road! Open range. Paved all the way.
The FMC site west of Pocatello closed in December 2001 after more than 50 years in operation. About 300 people were then employed at the plant. The demolition started on 4/17/04. The holding ponds once capped will be monitored for the next 30 years or more. The waste piles and tailings are supposed to be covered with dirt and native grasses planted. This road is the old haul road where the mine trucks ran every few years to stock pile quartz rock to line the furnaces. The mine at Outlaw Springs a few miles up the road is already reclaimed. This road now ends at the FMC property line and fence. Watch for cows on the road, this is open range. No need to cross onto FMC private property to find this one. This road has no winter maintenance so in winter the difficulty rating will be high. Just want people to see the back side of the plant and to show where alot of the materials were dumped from the demolition.
