This cache has been approved by DCNR.
This cache is one of a series of caches to show off the beauty of the many small stream hollows in the Michaux State Forest. You begin your quest either at the locked DCNR gate along Milesburn Road adjacent to the upper end of Long Pine Reservoir and hiking southwest on the Locust Gap Trail or at the locked DCNR gate at the Locust Gap Trail off Quarry Gap Road. In either case, your route to the cache will be via the Locust Gap Trail and the Dark Hollow Trail. Maximum hiking distance to the cache is 1.25 miles. (This could also be a nice winter X-country ski trip for the hardy, experienced skier.)
This is a nice hike to enjoy the serenity and beauty of a Pennsylvania mixed hardwood/coniferous forest to one of the prettiest spots in the Michaux State Forest. If you are there in mid-July, the rhododendron blooms should be spectacular. The cache box is a camouflaged .30 cal. ammo box well-concealed among the elements of its surroundings. To find the cache, there is no need to climb onto the steep, rocky talus slope nearby.
Take time to enjoy the sights and sounds of the Pennsylvania forest while on this hike, but also take the same precautions you would take when entering any forested area on foot. ALWAYS WEAR BLAZE ORANGE DURING ANY HUNTING SEASON WHEN SEEKING THIS CACHE. Also note that the forest roads used to reach either of the parking areas may be hazardous or impassible during wintery weather.
