This cache is reachable from the village of Bennington by means of a lane and reasonable path all the way to the cache. The cache is a 1L container containing a log book, pencils and some small goodies.
A while ago we put out a nostalgia based cache, Silvine, which was reasonably well received, so we have decided to put out other ones in a similar vein. This time the theme of this series of caches is all those black and white films we watched in the 50’s and 60’s, with their stiff upper lips and accents to match.
Please note that there is some confusion about the dates of films on web sites. Sometimes the date quoted is when the film is made, sometimes the date is the release date. For the purposes of this cache the BFI copyright date has been taken (visit link)
So let’s start with stiff upper lip war films. The first film “Ice Cold in Alex” introduced Britain to lager in 195A. Following that is the film adaptation of Nicholas Monsarrat’s book, produced in 195B, and featuring the gravelly tones of Jack Hawkins and the plummy tones of Donald Sinden. Another film featuring Jack Hawkins with Alec Guinness was “Malta Story” made in 195C. A film that proved that men can wear shorts with socks and not look totally ridiculous!
Next come films about social attitudes in Britain. The first film, “The Man in the White Suit” made in 195D, is about enlightened self interest and the commonalities and differences in the class system. Sydney, the eccentric scientist played by Alec Guinness, makes a suit that never wears out, but soon finds this is not universally popular with workers and mill owners alike. The problems caused by winning the Pools are played out in the homely film “Easy Money” produced in 194E. The final film in this selection features Alec Guinness in eight different members of the d’Ascoyne family who are being murdered one by one by Dennis Price. A brilliant analysis of what makes the aristocracy tick, this film was made in 194F.
Our final selection has crime as its theme. Jack Hawkins is again featured in this 196G film “The League of Gentlemen”. A group of disgruntled ex army types decide to plan and execute a bank robbery using the skills the military taught them. Their undoing is a small boy who collects car numbers. Never under estimate the abilities of small boys to foil major crime! The final film “Ring of Spies” made in 196H stars Bernard Lee as the true life spy Henry Houghton.
