This is a series featuring 8 pubs. The co-ordinates are for the car park only and not the cache.You will have to work out the co-ordinates from a clue when you reach the pub and also a pub quiz question given at the bottom of this page before you do this cache. There is no need to enter the pub as all clues are outside, so this series is suitable for families with children. You will also find in each cache a number to work out the final cache. Except for the final cache, you can do them in any order.

Wirral has so many lovely pubs from quiet relaxing pubs, child friendly pubs and also pubs with great entertainment. Best of all we have lots of “Real Ale” pubs. This series, we hope will hi-light some of our fantastic pubs. There is a FTF in every cache. To complete the co-ordinates for the North, you have to answer the question below and use the right numbers
If you receive an endorsement for drink driving, how long will that endorsement remain on your license?
A. 5 years
B. 8 years
C. 11 years

A= .721
B= .809
C= .963

To complete the co-ordinates for the West you have to work out how many miles there are to Seacome Ferry. Take this number x 34 and add 1. If you stand in front of the Mags, this shouldn’t be too hard to work out.

The Mags and the Pilot are more “Local” pubs in a residential area.

The “Mags” as it is known to the locals is a very traditional multi-roomed pub with very good beer. Dating back to the 1700s, it was frequented by top hated gentlemen, city clerks and shipping people. These people often arrived in horse drawn carriages and were known as bay window customers.There is a good view of Liverpool and access to the promenade from here. This was my fathers favorite pub as we used to live around the corner. It has a surprising good beer garden and a bowling green. It is a very friendly pub where everyone talks to each other and you will always get a friendly welcome. I always brought my mother in her wheelchair after we went to the wonderful brass band concerts on Sundays at Vale Park. Sometimes we sat on the benches outside, on colder days we sat inside. Although there are a few steps I never had to ask for help to get my mother inside, there was always a willing hand. This is more of a beer drinker’s pub (CAMRA) and they don’t serve meals at night.

On your way to the cache, you will pass the Pilot Boat, known to the locals as the “Boathouse”. Sailors visited this pub, whilst the gunpowder was moved to and from their ship. Ships were not allowed to sail up the Mersey with gunpowder. The gunpowder was stored at the Battery nearby. This was more of a working class pub, with spittoons on the floor. This pub was frequented by soldiers and sailors alike. Post-Mortems were carried out here on bodies found in the Mersey. It is now very much a local pub with a small beer garden.

From here you will pass some very pleasant cottages with lots of history, and this is a proposed conservation area. One of my favorites is a little rotunda building, looking like a summerhouse with a lovely weather-vane on the top. It was used at one time in the fishing industry, and then later used in the gunpowder trade. Now it forms part of a house. The Round house as it is called is older than the Battery.

Crossing the road to the cache you will see old fortified walls which were the entrance to the Liscard Battery. This façade dates back to 1751 and is now a grade 2 listed building. This is where gunpowder was stored for ships entering the Mersey. In 1851 the 55th Royal Artillery moved in and it was equipped with seven 10 “ guns. This settlement was short lived and the guns were never fired in anger. The Battery was deemed obsolete in 1912.

The park nearby is Vale Park. In the summertime, every Sunday there is a brass band. On the weekdays there is a show called Summer Sensations. This show was a successor to Joytime which began in 1953 and was the longest running show in the country. Children (including myself) could have their “15 minutes of fame” from talent contest, fancy dress and “Joytime” Princess”. It was hosted by Uncle Norman and Auntie Dot. When Uncle Norman died, Auntie Dot still carried on and was awarded the British Empire Medal. Sadly Auntie Dot died in 1998, but the joy they brought to children lives on.

Stealth will be required to for this cache.
