Bjølstad kapell, Heidal
Norges eldste portalstolper. Gamlekirken fra Bjølstad fra 1531 ble lenge benyttet som låve, før den ble gjenreist som kapell ved siden av Heidal gamle kirke.
Gamlekirken har Norges eldste utskårne stavkirkeportal, muligens fra midten av 1000 tallet.
Portalen stammer fra den tidligere stavkirken, som igjen muligens hadde arvet den fra et gudehov i hedensk tid. Gamlekirken er et unikum, da den ble bygget i en stilendringstid fra stavkirker til tømmer.
Kirkegårdsmuren er også spesiell, da den er av laftet tømmer. Muren har også et knøttlite porthus tilhørende Gamlekirken fra Bjølstad
Heidal er enestående i landssammenheng som en historisk dokumentasjon av et dal-landskap.Utrolige 60% av bygdas 1300 hus er fra før 1900, med hele 18% fra 1700 tallet og eldste hus fra 1500 tallet.
17 gårdsanlegg har fredede hus og 9 av anleggene er totalfredet.
The Bjølstad Chapel, Heidal
Norway’s oldest portal post. The old 1531 church at the Heidal farm Bjølstad was for a long time used as a barn, until it was reconstructed as a chapel next to Heidal Church.
This old church is adorned by the oldest carved stave-church portal in the country.
It may date from the 12th century.
The portal dates back to the ancient stave church, which may in turn have taken it from a pagan place of worship, a “hov” to the northern gods.
The old church is unique survival from the period of transition between stavechurch architecture and log-built churches.
The churchyard wall is also unusual, being built from hand-shaped jointed timbers.
The wall has also a tiny gatehouse belonging to the old Bjølstad church.
In summer it is open to the public at a charge.
Heidal is unique in this country as a historical documentation of a rural vally.
An unbelievable 60 percent of this vally’s 1300 houses date from earlier than 1900.
18 percent of them were built in the 18th century, and the oldest house stems from the 16th century.
17 farms have houses that are protected, and nine of the farm are protected in their totality.
