Geocache Description:

With the release of Pirates of the Caribbean, Dead Man's Chest, my boys and I were inspired to create our own treasure hunt. This cache will bring you closer to the dead as you wrestle clues from them to find the cache.

The first part of the cache is called message in a bottle. There you will find the names of the dead and where to find them. Bring a pen and paper. You will have to match their names to the clues. If you can convince them to give up their secrets, they will tell you the location of the chest. (Be aware that some of the dead have a marker and a monument. Look at both so as not to miss a clue.)

To eliminate the dead who will only tell you lies, you must be "seeing red". This will be clear when you find the bottle. If you go at night, a red lens flashlight would be handy. The message in a bottle is hidden under rocks at the base of the tallest rock in a rocky outcropping. It’s in the shade of the rock in the afternoon. Remember, there are only nine men who have a tale to tell. (The bottle has gone missing so you can view the contents of the bottle as an image in the gallery.)

N35 A.BCD W120 EF.GHG (A is a two digit number)
Checksum for the five digit coordinate A.BCD is 23. EF.GHG is 31.

A = The day of the month this brother who is “At Rest” alone, died.

B = The number of the Calvary unit this officer was a part of.

C = The number of the month this Virginia native died. (He was also a First Sergeant in the Mexican War).

D = The second digit of this Irish native’s age when he died.

E = The third digit of the year this man was born who has doves resting over him. (The year he was born is not listed, but you can figure it out by doing the math.)

F = The number of the month this native of Ostrowo died.

G = The first digit of the age of this man when he died. He now rests in purple shade during the summer months.

H = The number of months old this man was, who rests under “A” sphere, when he died. (Years, months, and days are listed.)

The Key = The last three digits of his wife’s birth year. “Disturb not the sleep of death”.

The chest is under a large rock that is too big to move. Small rocks and well placed camouflage protect the chest from muggles.(See the uploaded image.) Please replace it the way you found it to protect it. The chest is filled with pirate related items, so if possible, bring similar items for trading. Watch out for snakes, real or imagined. The chest will only open with a key (three digit combination). Please return it to zero after you close it. Be careful not to change the combination when you reset it to zero. If you push the lock release to the left while turning the tumblers it will change the combination.

From the cache you can watch a silent movie at night or see finished what is unfinished on a $1 note at 236 degrees. Mr. Dorn keeps watch over the chest, so tread lightly.

Hopefully the hunt will spark your interest in local history. Keep an eye out for familar names like Dana, Righetti, Ferrini, and Sinsheimer. Proceed with respect and don’t attempt to gather the clues from the dead at night.

You can park where Exposition becomes Woodbridge at N35 15.996 W120 39.856. You can either walk or drive to the dead.
